USS Afar NCC-1607 TOS era

Using the Helena class as a starting point, the design was upgraded and changed enough to be consider an entirely new class, thus the Afar Class Heavy Cruiser was born. With large sections of the Federation territory largely unexplored, the Afar class was designed to operate on 10 year missions, rather than the normal 3 or 5 years. A high degree of priority was placed on reliability rather than high performance. The class does not have the same high warp speed of the later Constitution Class but can go head to head with a Klingon D7 or a Romulan Bird of Prey without receiving a scratch. The designers noted the class would be several months or, the case in one starship, four years away from assistance from any other starship or fleet. Many of class’s systems have double or triple normal backup, the Afar class could dish out plenty of fire power while taking a beating. The class has been described as pocket battleship, with well several recorded instants where one Afar class cruiser was able to defend itself from a small fleet of hostel enemy ship with moderate damage. However, the off side of this firepower can put a strain on the ship’s resources. Also, building one Afar class cruiser requires three times the amount of resources to construct and only five were completed in the first production series, with three more frames put into mothballs. A second series was planned and was later upgraded to the Surveyor class. 

USS Afar NX/NCC-1607: Lead vessel of her class. Commissioned in 2252. In 2275, after its last mission before its scheduled refit it was thought to be lost when a previous unknown unstable wormhole that engulf the vessel on it way to its homeport. The wormhole took the ship the other side of the Tholian Assembly, about 10,000 lightyears from their previous location. It took the crew 6 years to return federation space, the most amount of time any Federation vessel spent outside of Federation territory, until the USS Voyager was flung to the Delta Quadrant over a hundred years later. The USS Afar was commanded by Captain Darren Northman from commission to the final decommisioning.

USS Australis NCC-1608: Commissioned in 2253

USS Europa NCC-1609: Commissioned in 2254.

USS Anatolia NCC-1610: Commissioned in 2255. Mysterious disappeared in 2267 in the Ursa Beta system.

USS Amerigo NCC-1611: Commissioned in 2256 under the command of Captain Miranda Rudder. Last of the first series to be completed to the original design.
