Description
Like many of commissioned Star Ships in the Federation’s Fleet, the Afar class was upgraded with similar components to the Constitution class but since all where still out on their 10 year mission, Starfleet Command decided to refit the class as each vessel returned. From 2273 to 2280, each vessel slowly outfitted with the state of the art systems of that time. Most of the engineers at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards had a lot of experience from refitting the several Constitution class vessel and other classes, they requested to be allowed to draw from other projects. While Starfleet was hesitant at first, seeing as class was already over 25 years old and newer classes coming online, they eventually relinquished when the engineers told they only needed a 15 percent increase in budget since it was the dish, weapon systems and few other components from the Excelsior project. Each vessel took 3 years to complete and just like the Constitution class, the end result was essentially a brand new starship.
Seen here is the lead vessel of the class, USS Afar NCC-1607, which ironically was the last to be refitted. After its last mission before its scheduled refit it was thought to be lost when a previous unknown unstable wormhole that engulf the vessel on it way to it homeport. It took the crew 6 years to return federation space, the longest any Federation vessel spent outside of Federation territory until the USS Voyager was flung to the Delta Quadrant. The USS Afar was commanded by Captain Darren Northman from commission to the final decommisioning.
Now that the semester is over, I was able to complete the TMP era of the Amerigo.

Love the design! Is it okay if I use the secondary hull for my take on the Neo Constitution Class?
